You Don’t Have to Train Alone
Here’s something we see every year across the running world: someone signs up for their first race, follows a training plan faithfully for a few weeks, then quietly quits somewhere around week four.
Not because the plan was too hard. Because training alone is hard.
There’s nobody to meet at the trailhead. Nobody to text when you’re debating whether to skip a run. No one who notices when you do show up.
If you’ve registered for the Bronte Harbour Classic 5K — or you’re thinking about it — there’s an easier way to get to the start line. It’s free, it’s close to home, and it runs directly through the neighbourhood where the race takes place.
The Bronte Runners Club
The Bronte Runners Club is one of the largest and most active running communities in the Halton region. Close to 700 members. All ages. All paces.
This isn’t a competitive group where you’ll feel out of place. It’s a community group. People come to get their kilometres in, to stay accountable, and to enjoy a run with company. You’ll find former elite athletes and people who started running last spring. That’s the point.
Both of the Bronte Harbour Classic’s co-directors — Greg Kowalczyk and Charles J. Sathmary — are co-leads of the Bronte Runners. The race you’re training for was built by the same people who run these routes every week. Meet the full race team.
✅ No Membership. No Cost.
Joining the Bronte Runners is free. There's no formal registration — just join the Facebook group and show up to a run.
When and Where the Group Meets
Wednesday Evenings — 6:00 PM
The midweek anchor of the group. Runs depart from the Running Room in downtown Oakville. These are structured group runs, organized by pace, with routes planned in advance. This is where the week’s training gets done.
Wednesday runs are particularly useful if you’re following a 5K training plan — they land on a natural midweek effort day and you’ll have people around you running at similar speeds.
Weekends — Saturdays and Sundays
Weekend runs launch from the gazebo at Bronte Harbour Marine Park — which is, not coincidentally, the same harbour your 5K will start from on June 21st.
Weekend distances vary by the group’s training cycle. Some weeks it’s 5K. Some weeks it’s 10-15K. Pace is social — the goal is getting the kilometres in with company, not running fast.
💡 Bonus
Running the weekend course means you'll know the race route before race day. There are no surprises on June 21st for Bronte Runners members.
What to Expect When You Show Up
If it’s your first time, say so. The group is accustomed to welcoming new runners and will match you with a pace group that makes sense for where you are.
You don’t need to be fast. You don’t need to run the whole thing. What you need is to show up and keep moving. That’s it.
Most people who try their first group run come back the following week. Running with others changes the experience entirely — the kilometres go faster, the hard days feel less hard, and you have actual people to celebrate with when you cross a finish line.
How Group Training Gets You to the Start Line
If you’re following our 8-week training plan, the Bronte Runners schedule fits naturally alongside it:
- Weekday group run (Wednesday) → covers your midweek effort session
- Saturday or Sunday group run → covers your longer weekend run
- Third session → a solo easy run mid-week on your own
You don’t have to do every run with the group. But having even two of your three weekly runs with company makes an enormous difference for consistency.
⚠️ A Honest Note on Pacing
If you're an absolute beginner, the Wednesday structured runs may feel fast in the early weeks. Don't be afraid to hang back or run your own pace within the group. The point is company and accountability — not keeping up.
The Club Behind the Race
The Bronte Harbour Classic wouldn’t exist without the Bronte Runners. The race came directly out of years of the club travelling to other events and asking: why doesn’t Bronte have its own race?
In 2025, Team WIN/Primal Athletics/Bronte Runners was the largest fundraising group in Oakville for the Terry Fox Run, raising $27,000. This is a community that shows up.
June 21st is a chance for the club to race in its own backyard. If you’re already a member, you know what that means. If you’re not yet, this is a good reason to change that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to run a certain distance before joining the group? No. There’s no minimum. If you can walk for 30 minutes, you can show up to a group run and participate at your own pace.
Is the Facebook group the only way to find out about runs? Yes — the Facebook group is where run times and routes are posted each week. It’s also where members connect, ask questions, and celebrate finishes.
I’m training for the Kids 1K with my child. Is the group appropriate? The main group runs are adult-paced road runs. For family-friendly training, the weekend runs at Bronte Harbour are a better fit — bring the kids and let them run the waterfront path while you get your kilometres in nearby. See our Kids 1K Fun Run guide for everything you need to know about race day with your child.
I’ve never run a race before. Will I fit in? Yes. The club is built around exactly the kind of person who hasn’t raced before. First-timers are welcomed — not just tolerated.
