Your kid has watched races before. Stood on the sidelines, cheered for someone, maybe tugged your sleeve to ask why they can’t run too.
On June 21 at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park, they can.
The Speak Squad Kids 1K Fun Run is a 1-kilometre race built specifically for young runners — their own start line, their own course, their own finish line. It runs at 8:00 AM as part of the Mercedes-Benz Oakville Bronte Harbour Classic — kicking off the morning before the adult 5K starts at 8:30 AM. Parents run their race, kids run theirs, and the whole family finishes the morning at the waterfront festival together.
Quick Answer: The Speak Squad Kids 1K Fun Run takes place at 8:00 AM on June 21, 2026 at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park in Oakville, Ontario. The race is 1 kilometre, run on the festival grounds. Open to children of all fitness levels. Sponsored by Speak Squad, a children’s public speaking and confidence program. Register separately from the adult 5K through Race Roster at bronteharbourclassic.com/register. Free waterfront festival runs all day — families can stay for the full day after the race.
What Is the Speak Squad Kids 1K?
It’s exactly what the name says: a 1-kilometre fun run for kids. Not a chip-timed competitive race. Not a workout. A run — with a real start, a real finish line, and a crowd of parents and families cheering the whole way.
The distance is achievable for almost any child who’s physically active. One kilometre is 2.5 laps of a standard outdoor track, or roughly 10–12 minutes of easy running. Kids who’ve never raced before complete it every day at school cross-country events without training specifically for it.
What makes it feel different from school running is the atmosphere. There’s a festival going on around it. Music is playing. People are there who came to watch. The finish line has that specific energy of a real race — because it is one.
Who Is It For?
Kids of all fitness levels. The Kids 1K is a fun run, not a competition. There are no categories, no rankings, no pressure to run fast.
If your child:
- Runs around at recess every day
- Has asked about running a race
- Wants to do something alongside dad on Father’s Day
- Has a sibling or cousin who ran the 5K and wants their version of it
— this race is built for them.
We don’t publish age restrictions, but the course is appropriate for kids roughly 5 and up. Younger children are welcome with a parent running alongside.
About Speak Squad
Speak Squad is the Official Sponsor of the Kids 1K, and the reason the race carries their name.
Speak Squad teaches children public speaking, presentation, and confidence skills — the kind of abilities that don’t often get emphasized in traditional school settings. Their programs are built around the idea that a child who can stand up and speak with confidence is a child who carries that skill into every part of their life.
It’s a natural fit for a kids race. The moment a child crosses a finish line in front of a crowd, they’ve done something brave. Speak Squad understands that. They’re here for exactly that moment.

Race Day Details
Date: Sunday, June 21, 2026 (Father’s Day)
Start time: 8:00 AM
Location: Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park, Oakville, Ontario
Distance: 1 kilometre
Course: Festival grounds — flat, safe, fully within the park
Crowd: Festival attendees + family spectators

The Kids 1K starts at 8:00 AM — the same time as the festival opens, kicking off the morning before the 5K begins at 8:30 AM.
The Medal
Every child who crosses the finish line takes home a real medal.
The Speak Squad Kids 1K Fun Run finisher medal is gold, with a rainbow scalloped border and rainbow ribbon. The front reads “FUN FINISHER!” with two kids celebrating at the Bronte waterfront — the same lighthouse that anchors the 5K medal, now illustrated just for them. Flip it over: “YOU DID AMAZING!” is engraved on the back.
No minimum time. No minimum pace. Cross the line and it’s yours.
Older kids: Kids who prefer the main 5K antique-silver finisher medal — the one with the Bronte lighthouse in relief and the Mercedes-Benz star at the top — can choose that at the finish line instead. No decision needed before race day.
How to Register
Register through Race Roster at bronteharbourclassic.com/register.
The Kids 1K is a separate registration from the adult 5K. If you’re also running the 5K yourself, you’ll register twice — once for each race.
Registration is open now. We recommend registering early as space is limited and race day registration may not be available.
What Parents Do During the Kids 1K
The Kids 1K runs at 8:00 AM — before the adult 5K starts at 8:30 AM. So if you’re also running the 5K, you’ll be warming up while your child races, then you take the line 30 minutes later. If you’re not racing the 5K, you’re fully free to run alongside or cheer from the sideline for the entire Kids 1K.
Then you watch.
The Kids 1K course runs through the festival grounds, so spectators can see the start, parts of the course, and the finish line — all from within the festival. You won’t be standing on a closed road a kilometre away. You’ll be right there.
If you didn’t run the 5K, you can position yourself near the finish line from the moment the race starts and watch your child the whole way.
The race is short. It’ll feel like it’s over before it started. That’s normal — and that’s also the whole point. The memory of finishing lasts longer than the 10 minutes it takes.
How to Prepare Your Child
Honest answer: most kids don’t need specific preparation for a 1K.
If they play outside, run at recess, or participate in any sport, they’re already capable of finishing a kilometre at their own pace. The Kids 1K is a fun run, not a race against the clock.
A few things that actually help:
The night before:
- Talk about what will happen — the start line, the run, the finish, the crowd cheering
- Pick out what they’re wearing (comfort matters more than speed)
- Early bedtime — tired kids don’t perform their best and don’t enjoy themselves
Race morning:
- Light breakfast, at least an hour before — nothing heavy
- Bring water for before and after; hydration is provided during the adult race but Kids 1K logistics are separate
- Arrive with enough time to see the end of the 5K and the awards ceremony — gives kids context for what they’re about to do
During the race:
- Run with them if they want you to, or let them go ahead — both are fine
- Focus on finishing, not on pace
- The cheering from the crowd does most of the work anyway
After the Race: The Festival
The Kids 1K finishes and the day doesn’t end. The Father’s Day Waterfront Festival runs until 3:00 PM — and it’s built for families.
- Kids zone with activities running all day
- Live music on the waterfront stage
- 50+ local vendor booths
- Fortinos food on-site
- Beer garden from Nickelbrook Brewing for adults 19+
A child who ran a race and then got to spend the rest of the morning at a waterfront festival is a child who had a genuinely good Father’s Day. That’s the plan.
Why This Race Matters (the part worth saying out loud)
We added the Kids 1K because running races are mostly adult events. Kids come as spectators, which is fine — but it’s a different experience than being in it.
The first time a kid crosses a finish line with a crowd cheering — even a small crowd, even a neighbourhood race — something shifts. They did something hard. People saw them do it. They have proof.
The Speak Squad Kids 1K gives kids that moment on Father’s Day, alongside their parents and families, at one of the most beautiful spots on the Oakville waterfront.
Register them. Show up. Let them run.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age is the Kids 1K for?
The race is designed for children roughly 5 and up. There are no strict age cutoffs — younger children are welcome if accompanied by a parent. Older kids (10–12) who want a real racing challenge might prefer the adult 5K, but many choose the Kids 1K for the fun-run atmosphere.
Is a parent allowed to run with their child?
Yes. Parents are welcome to run alongside their child for the full distance. Many do.
Does my child receive a medal?
Yes — every Kids 1K finisher receives a specially designed finisher medal, made just for the kids. Older kids who prefer the main race medal — the antique-silver piece with the Bronte lighthouse and Mercedes-Benz star, identical to the 5K finisher medal — can choose that at the finish line instead.
Is the Kids 1K timed?
No. The Speak Squad Kids 1K is a fun run with no chip timing and no competitive categories. It’s about finishing, not finishing first.
Can my child register on race day?
We recommend pre-registering through Race Roster. Race day registration may be available depending on capacity — check the register page for current availability.
What if my child is nervous?
This is normal and usually wears off the moment the race starts. Walk the course with them beforehand if it helps, and remind them that nobody’s watching their time. The crowd is there to cheer every finisher — including the slow ones and the ones who walk part of it.
Where do I stand to watch my child finish?
The Kids 1K finish line is within the festival grounds. Spectators can watch from the festival area directly. There’s no separate spectator zone — you can be close to the finish line and cheer from right there.
